Do You Need a Degree to Practice Christian Counseling?
Just like any therapist or counselor, you need a thorough, advanced education in psychology, counseling, and psychotherapy in order to offer professional assistance to people in need. In addition to this, Christian counselors practice a faith-based approach that is grounded in the teachings provided in the Bible. While a degree is not required to practice Christian counseling, it is nevertheless an extremely good idea to obtain formal training to become any kind of counselor.
What is Christian Counseling?
All counselors aim to help people overcome personal problems, bring joy and meaning to their lives, and become healthier in a holistic sense. Christian counselors follow similar methods to secular counselors regarding the basic principles of psychology and psychotherapy, but they also view the Bible as the ultimate authority, and as the standard against which all behaviors and beliefs are judged. Unlike a secular counselor, a Christian counselor believes that there is just one true and righteous path in life that his or her counselees should follow, in order to attain God's love and follow God's will, and that this path is laid out in the Bible.
Why is a Degree Important?
- Learn to follow a strict code of professionalism and ethics. Earning a degree in Christian Counseling will educate you about the necessary moral code, rules of conduct, and degree of professionalism necessary to operate as a well-trained, qualified counselor.
- If you want to get paid for your services, you need a degree . You cannot in good faith charge your clients money if you do not offer a qualified, professional skill-set. There is a difference between giving someone casual advice, and giving someone informed, well-guided advice as an expert with the necessary experience and qualifications. If you want to offer the latter to people in need, then you will need a Christian counseling degree.
- Learn to counsel a wide variety of people. A degree will teach you how to tailor your counseling skills to individuals, married couples, families, the young, and the elderly.
- Receive extensive Biblical training specifically related to faith-based counseling. A Christian counselor needs to have an extremely advanced understanding of the tenets of Christianity and the Bible, and know how these principles apply to aiding people in their path to a better life. As a Christian counselor, you help your clients substitute biblical truth for worldly error in their everyday lives in order to set them free. The wisdom, guidance, and advice you offer hurting individuals must therefore be grounded in the word of God in the Bible.
- Learn to work with people in a wide variety of settings. You will learn approaches to counseling people in churches, private settings, youth groups, non-profit religious groups, and more.
- Develop your personal Christian counseling philosophy. A degree will help you hone your own unique counseling philosophy that includes not only theories, techniques, and trends from psychology and counseling, but also principles based in the Bible.
You should pursue and enroll in a degree in Christian Counseling if you feel a spiritual or religious calling to help people in need through the words of the Bible and the practice of psychology, psychotherapy, and counseling.
